What is the Detroit Mural Project?

The Detroit Mural Project is an archive of hundreds of Detroit pubic art pieces created in 2015.

The project introduces both residents and visitors to the public art available around them. Whether on a smartphone or computer the project allows students, teacher, residents, and tourists to see cities in a new light, encourages them to travel off of the beaten path, and instils pride by enabling a cultured and informed art appreciating community.

Below each piece in the collection you will eventually find background information on each piece such as the artist names, year completed, who commissioned it, and other relevant information as well as a linked address that will open directions to the selected mural in the default map application on your device.

How do you decide what counts as aRT?

To be considered for the archive, murals must be publicly accessible, on an exterior wall, not self-promotional (no tags or graffiti, very few exceptions), and minimally commercial.

Due to the large workload the collection currently only consists of art in the cities of Detroit, Hamtramck, and Highland Park, Michigan.

Why isn’t my mural on here?

I apologize if your mural is not on the website. All murals are photographed and researched by only one person and yours might still be in progress. If this is the case please send an email to with the following information:
